Long Black
Bold espresso meets hot water
Sm $4.50 / Lg $5.50
The Story
The long black is an antipodean innovation that emerged in Australian and New Zealand cafes during the specialty coffee movement of the 1980s. It was developed as a local adaptation of the Americano, but with one crucial difference: hot water is poured into the cup first, then the espresso is poured on top — preserving the crema and delivering a bolder, more aromatic experience.
Unlike a flat white or latte, the long black contains no milk, allowing the natural flavour complexity of the espresso to shine through — notes of dark chocolate, stone fruit, or caramel depending on the bean origin and roast profile. The larger volume of water (around 180–240 ml) softens the intensity without diluting the character.
At Cappadocia, our long black is made with a double ristretto poured over filtered hot water, creating a full-bodied cup with a sustained crema — the preferred choice for guests who enjoy their coffee strong and unadulterated.
