The Story

Matcha is finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves called tencha. The practice of drinking powdered green tea was introduced to Japan from China in the 12th century by Buddhist monk Eisai, who brought seeds and the tea-grinding tradition back from China. Over the following centuries, the Japanese developed the elaborate tea ceremony (chanoyu) around matcha, elevating it to a spiritual and aesthetic practice.

Unlike steeped green teas where leaves are discarded, with matcha you consume the entire leaf in powdered form — giving it a significantly higher concentration of antioxidants, caffeine, and L-theanine (an amino acid that promotes calm alertness) than regular green tea. Modern matcha lattes blend this ceremonial powder with steamed milk for an approachable, vibrant green drink.

At Cappadocia, we use premium ceremonial-grade matcha — bright green, sweet, and grassy — whisked with hot water before being combined with steamed milk to create a smooth, beautifully coloured latte that delivers both wellness benefits and a distinctive, earthy-sweet flavour.
