Looking for date night restaurants in Sydney that feel special without the fuss? A relaxed Turkish dinner for two in Darlinghurst, and what to order.
The best date night restaurants in Sydney are not always the ones with the longest waiting lists. A great date needs a room where you can hear each other, food that gives you something to talk about, and a pace that lets the evening stretch out. Formal tasting menus rarely manage all three.
A Turkish dinner does. It is built for sharing, which turns every dish into a small conversation, and it ends with rituals, hot künefe and a cup of Turkish coffee, that make a night feel like an occasion. Here is how to plan a date night in Darlinghurst.
Why Shared Plates Make a Better Date
Sharing food is quietly intimate. You taste the same things, trade opinions and pass the last piece back and forth. Turkish meals are designed this way, with mezze in the middle of the table and mains meant to be split, so the dinner becomes something you do together rather than two separate meals eaten at the same time.
What to Order for Two
Start slow with mezze
Order two or three dips ($6 each) with warm Turkish bread. Babaganoush is smoky and silky, haydari is cool yoghurt with fresh herbs, and ezme brings a little heat. If you are hungry, add a cold mezze plate ($16).
Share the mains
- Ali Nazik ($27): slow-cooked lamb on smoked eggplant purée with garlic yoghurt and tomato sauce. The dish to order if you order one thing.
- Lamb shish ($27): marinated lamb straight from the charcoal grill.
- Mantı ($22): tiny beef dumplings under garlic yoghurt and spiced butter. Comforting, and made for sharing.
- Gözleme ($18): hand-rolled flatbread, perfect if you want something lighter.
Finish with something to share
Künefe ($15) is the date night dessert. It arrives hot, a golden crust of kadayıf pastry around stretchy melted cheese, soaked in syrup and scattered with pistachio, and it is impossible to eat politely. If you prefer something cooler, share a tiramisu ($10) or a San Sebastián cheesecake ($9).
End With Turkish Coffee and a Fortune
Turkish coffee ($5.50) is brewed slowly in a small copper pot and served thick, with the grounds settling at the bottom of the cup. In Turkey, when the coffee is finished, it is traditional to turn the cup upside down on the saucer, wait for it to cool, and read your fortune in the patterns left behind. Nobody takes it too seriously, which is exactly why it makes such a good end to a date.
A Vegetarian Date Night
If one or both of you do not eat meat, Turkish food is generous. Build the table around the dips, the cold mezze plate and a spinach and feta gözleme, and save the room for künefe. Every dish on our menu is labelled V, VG, GF or GFO, so there is no guesswork.
Why Darlinghurst Works for a Date
Darlinghurst is one of the few inner Sydney suburbs where a date can be a whole evening on foot. Terraces, small bars, galleries and theatres sit within a few blocks of each other, and Stanley Street itself has the feel of a neighbourhood strip rather than a dining precinct. You can walk from dinner to a drink to a late stroll through Hyde Park without ever needing a car.
Planning the Night
